Mumbai Free Wifi Hotspots: Maharashtra state Monday (January 9, 2017) launched WiFi (Wireless Internet) services connecting 500 hotspots across Mumbai under the smart city project. By May 1 next year, the government will extend the free WiFi services across 1200 hotspots. The phase 1 of public Wi-Fi service in Mumbai, earning the title of the largest public Wi-Fi city in India. The bandwidth offered on the Wifi spots is 20 Mbps. The first 30 minutes or 1 GB will be offered free after which the WiFi will cost you. The government hopes this will enable them to fund the bandwidth cost. India’s biggest public Wi-Fi network, and among the world’s largest, went live at 500 dedicated hotspots across the city here on January 9, 2017.

“Happy to dedicate Phase 1 of MumbaiWiFi. For this instance, 500 Hotspots go live across various locations in Mumbai,” Fadnavis said in a tweet.

By May 1, 2017, the government will extend the free WiFi services across 1200 hotspots.

During the trial period between January 2-8, around 23,000 users signed up in Mumbai and downloaded more than 2TB (TetraByte) data, which Fadnavis termed as “a major aspect of digital empowerment in the state”.

The free wifi hotspots in Mumbai will be available in railway stations, colleges, places of worship, hospitals and popular tourist destinations such as the Gateway of India, Khaugalli, Marine drive, Juhu, Choupati, Band Stand, Aksa beach, Churchgate, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Prabha Devi, Shivaji Park, Tarapore Aquarium, Bombay Stock Market, among various places across Eastern, Western and Harbour railways.
