PM Narendra Modi’s Mega Rally: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a mega rally (parivartan rally) today (January 2nd, 2017) in Uttar Pradesh (UP) capital Lucknow. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, senior leaders Rajnath Singh, Kalraj Mishra, and Uma Bharti are among those attending the rally. It will be the first rally by Prime Minister Modi after the expiry of the 50-day grace period of demonetization on December 30. The parivartan rally to be held at the Ramabai Ambedkar grounds from 12.30 pm onwards, the BJP reportedly hopes to see a turnout of over 10 lakh people — double the capacity of the 80 acre ground. The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit has wagered that PM Modi’s rally today will pack the massive Ramabai Ambedkar ground, named after the wife of Dalit icon Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

The BJP says that will change today, and expects over 10 lakh people to arrive in about 10,000 buses from all over the state to attend the PM’s rally. Ms. Mayawati is Dalit and draws significant support from the community.

In his rally today, the Prime Minister is also likely to repeat his New Year Eve announcements and thank the people of Uttar Pradesh for what he claims has been their immense support for his November 8 demonetisation move to curb black money, end counterfeit currency, stop finance of terrorism and move towards a cashless economy.

On Saturday, New Year’s Eve, PM Modi address to the nation on New Year’s Eve announced several measures for the rural and urban poor, small businesses, farmers and senior citizens.
