PBL (Premier Badminton League) Players Draft: The third edition of the league, PBL 2017 is scheduled to be played between December 22, 2017, and January 14, 2018, and will enthrall fans at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chennai, and Guwahati. The 24-day league will see eight teams. As per the PBL, a total of 133 Badminton players will take part in the draft. A total of 133 players will go under the hammer. As many as 10 Olympic medallists (including 3 multiple medal winners) and eight medallists from the recently-concluded World Championships have confirmed their presence for the Rs 6 crore League, which gets underway in December.

Players from as many as 11 countries, including China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany and Hong Kong will be up for grabs in the mega-auction.

Highlights of PBL Auction 2017:

  • Chennai Smashers retained Olympic silver medallist Sindhu for Rs 48.75 lakhs.
  • Saina was retained for Rs 41,25,000. She was retained by Awadhe Warriors for the base price of Rs 33 lakhs last season.
  • Srikanth will also play for his old team Awadhe Warriors after they used the ‘Right To Match’ card. He will now make Rs 56,10,000.
  • Among others, doubles players — India’s Satwik Sairaj, Korea’s Lee Young Dae and Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov — were all retained by their old teams and were not be part of the auction.
  • Tai Tzu Ying who was bought by Ahmedabad Smash Masters for Rs 52 lakhs.
  • Carolina Marin from Spain was bought by Hyderabad Hunters, the team she played last season, for a base price of Rs 50 lakhs.
  • Viktor Axelsen was bought by his old team Bengaluru Blasters for Rs 50 lakhs
  • World number 2 Son Wan Ho and World number 5 Sung Ji Hyun went to Delhi Acers for Rs 50 lakh each.
  • Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Wei Wang will be the icon player for North Eastern Warriors after he was bought by them for Rs 52 lakhs.
  • Christinna Pedersen became the most expensive doubles player after she was picked up by Awadhe Warriors for Rs 42 lakh.
  • Pedersen’s partner Kamilla Rytter Juhl went to Ahmedabad Smash Masters for Rs 35 lakhs.
  • Doubles specialists Prajakta Sawant and Chirag Shetty were bought by North Eastern Warriors for Rs 7 lakhs and 5 lakhs respectively.
  • India’s top doubles shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa went to Delhi Acers for Rs 20 lacs, while Manu Attri was picked by Bengaluru Blasters for Rs 17 lakh.
  • Pranaav Jerry Chopra was taken by Delhi Acers for Rs 18 Lakh
  • Arathi Sara Sunil will make her PBL debut for Delhi Acers, who bought her for Rs 3 lakhs.

League Prize Money Details:

The winning team will take home Rs 3 crore and the runner-up will get Rs 1.5 crore. The two semi-finalists will get Rs 75 lakh each.

Some Key Highlights of the PBL 2017 Auction:

  • More than 200 players, including big names from China, are expected to available for auction on Monday.
  • The PBL Twitter page, on Sunday, October 7, hinted that world number one Women’s singles star Tai Tzu Ying will be part of the cash-rich tournament’s third season.
  • Each team will have a purse of Rs 2.12 crore with a cap of Rs 70 lakh, a senior BAI official had told The Hindu last month.
  • All eight teams will have 10 players each.
  • No more than six foreign players are allowed in each team.
  • Each team should have three women players.
